Welcome to our latest episode folks! We’re really excited about this one. Talking about doing the Thing (with a capital ‘T’!) before you’re ready! This is a subject we are both incredibly passionate about as we’ve both got lots of experiencing of doing the thing before we were ready. So, let’s dive into this episode to see what we talked about!

Are you ever ready to do the thing?

We started the episode from a lovely little quote we found by Amy Poehler:

“Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that- that’s what life is. You might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that’s really special and if you’re not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself.”

What we talk about

Sarah’s first wedding.

Carla’s first pet shoot with a sense of urgency. And the miracle that is Captain Floof! Also, how urgency doesn’t give you a chance to overthink things. React and do!

A mix of doubt and confidence. Finding out you can do the Thing and the confidence that gives you.

Learning from our mistakes or from just doing the Thing.

How it’s US holding ourselves back, no one else, because of the stands we hold ourselves to. And how those standards completely outweigh others’ expectations of us.

How there’s never a certificate awarded to tell you when you’re ready. (That one’s annoying!)

“Men apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% of them.” – Harvard Business Review, Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualified

The awesome advice Carla was given many years ago: “If you can do it all on day one, then you’re in the wrong job.”

How you don’t need to know it all to be able to do the Thing. And how we’re always learning.

Analysis paralysis – letting the little details hold you back from even getting started. There’s some great advice here if this is something you struggle with.

What is it that actually gets you to take that leap?

How NOT doing the Thing would actually be more painful than doing the Thing and failing. And how it allows you to see what’s possible.

Making a commitment to yourself to do the Thing, and how it actually shows you ARE ready!

Faking it ’til you make it.

How qualifications don’t necessarily make you ready. And how you shouldn’t let NOT having any stop you.

It doesn’t matter how you “get the shot” – it just matters that you are. Do it your way.

You’re probably more ready to do the Thing than you realise. Stop putting it off, step outside that comfort zone and just do it! Trust that you’re exactly where you need to be right now.

Also, if you’ve made it this far, here’s a fun quiz…. how many times do you think we said THING in this podcast?!

Stuff we mentioned

South East Creatives

Kate Atkin – an expert in Imposter Syndrome

And a little song Carla mentioned – warning… if you don’t like the ‘f’ word, do not hit play! Most definitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK!
